Project Moving TargetŪ (including the book You Are The Target) received a grant from Health Canada, Tobacco Control Program in collaboration with The Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. & Yukon, has been approved by the U.S. Dept. of Education and complies with CDC Guidelines for School Health Programs to Prevent Tobacco Use and Addiction.
Author Georgina Lovell has talked to over 90,000 students of all ages in Canada and the U.S. and in March 2004 was a speaker at the 3rd World Assembly Tobacco Counters Health conference in New Delhi, India. Following requests from those working with youth leaders in tobacco prevention and control, she now offers half-day facilitator training workshops - working with teachers, parents, health professionals, high school students, college students, addiction counsellors and conference organizers involved in youth mentoring. Workshops include facilitation of role-plays practicing refusal and assertiveness skills to prepare children of all ages for peer pressure when the first offer of a smoke/chew is made; also to help strengthen the resolve to quit. Project Moving Target is unique in its use of the tobacco industry's own formerly secret documents. Mentoring partnerships range from age 20+ , teens, tweens and primary school children who help each other to learn how they have been profiled and identified as tomorrow's tobacco profits. Formerly secret tobacco industry documents leave no doubt about the history of tobacco industry lies, manipulation, duplicity and fraud. See how smokers are insulted and ridiculed by the companies who manufacture cigarettes, how smokers are referred to in previously secret industry documents as "scum", "stupid" and "drug addicts". Nobody likes to be taken for a fool. Project Moving Target reinforces existing reasons never to start smoking, and provides additional motivation to stop.
PURPOSE: To raise awareness about tobacco industry fraud and misconduct. METHOD: Copies of actual tobacco documents made available for the first time through recent litigation illustrate : *how nicotine levels have been manipulated in cigarettes to guarantee addiction; *how tobacco spends $1 million an hour on advertising, primarily to target youth and women; * tobacco industry's callous disregard for disclosing information they have had for up to fifty years about the addictive nature of nicotine and the health consequences of smoking; *how Hollywood is used by the tobacco industry to portray smoking as "normal"; * linked reading to relevant pages in You Are The Target (Big Tobacco: Lies, Scams - Now The Truth) for further independent research and discussion. GOAL: To provide additional motivation for youth to resist taking up smoking and when this has not happened, to provide additional motivation (i.e. outrage at the tobacco industry) to assist in smoking cessation. RESOURCES: One-litre glass jar containing molasses: this is the equivalent of the quantity of tar inhaled by a pack a day smoker in one year. Section 1: Tobacco Advertising - Truth or Dare? Section 2: Project SCUM - Do They Mean You? Section 3: Tobacco Silence & Science - Why Tell the Truth When Lies Sound Better? Section 4: Spitting Image: Quit The Spit (Don't be sucked in by tobacco) Section 5: TARnished Movie Stars: Tobacco Influence in Hollywood BONUS: Presentation Skills mini-workshop, designed to build confidence and competence in public speaking and appearing before groups large and small
