| Georgina dedicated four years to researching material for You Are The Target (Big Tobacco: Lies, Scams - Now the Truth). She has travelled throughout Canada, the U.S., the United Kingdom and India to attend and speak at seminars, conferences and lectures on tobacco control. Georgina has talked to over 350,000 children of all ages internationally to help raise youth awareness about tobacco strategies and marketing focus. McGraw-Hill/Dushkin Publishing, Higher Education Editions have purchased non-exclusive world rights to reprint selected pages from You Are The Target (Big Tobacco: Lies, Scams - Now the Truth ) in the college textbook "Taking Sides" She completed course material at a Tobacco Intervention Training & Program Development conference led by Dr. Richard Hurt, Director of the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Centre who taught aspects of and treatments for nicotine addition, and gave a breakout lecture about his experiences as an expert witness in a major tobacco trial in the U.S. Georgina is the B.C. Co-Ordinator for the Tar Wars Program, a tobacco-free education program and poster contest supported by the American Academy of Family Physicians which reaches approximately 400,000 fourth and fifth grade students annually in the U.S. and Canada. Georgina was awarded a scholarship to attend the Tar Wars annual conference in Washington, D.C. in July 2002. While living in England in the 1980's and early 1990's, Georgina volunteered with The Samaritans, a non-profit suicide intervention service. In addition to her duties as a "Sam", she was appointed as Publicity Officer for her branch, and in that capacity regularly worked with local media including co-hosting/moderating a phone-in BBC radio program. She reviewed books for the quarterly national newsletter, and also wrote and produced material for Samaritan training manuals. Since her return home to Canada, Georgina has volunteered in her community as a hospice worker and crisis line counsellor. Working with Rae Schidlo, M.Ed., Georgina compiled You Are The Target's companion classroom curriculum Project Moving Target , the first of its kind in youth tobacco awareness education . Participants in the pilot project received civic awards from the Mayor of North Vancouver for community service completed in their mentoring of elementary school pupils. Project Moving Target has been approved for use in American schools by Educational Resources Information Center (E.R.I.C. # ED473172) sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences of the U.S. Department of Education. Project Moving Target complies with CDC Guidelines for School Health Programs to Prevent Tobacco Use and Addiction. Originally from Toronto, Georgina now lives in Vancouver. She is a member of Globalink, AIRSPACE and supports the Blue Ribbon Campaign. She is a busy international guest speaker for schools and special interest groups working to raise the awareness of tobacco industry tactics. |
