Building Leadership for Action in Schools Today: B.L.A.S.T.

In 1996 the Alberta Lung Association  developed  the concept of a youth conference focused on tobacco reduction.  The BLAST Conference and follow-up program educates junior high youth through the development of leadership and communication skills, and empowers them to make positive changes within their schools, youth groups, and communities.

B.L.A.S.T.   CONFERENCE  NOVEMBER 2003
Cree Medicine Woman, Healer, Teacher, Author
Alberta,  Canada
Darlene taught a workshop on sacred native traditions including tobacco use.

Sacred tobacco is

· offered to the earth  or to a fire, where it is held in the hand and
is not smoked.

· offered to a Healer, Elder, or other person as a sign of respect.

· used in selected sacred ceremonies in a peace pipe where it is puffed/exhaled,
not smoked

Traditional Cree ceremonies use pipes filled with a mixture of natural herbs and sweetgrass, not  the tobacco grown for cigarettes .
